The dress of the Scots with the shoulder plaid and kilt has undergone fewer changes through the centuries than any other. The details of the complete equipment of a Highland Chief in 1797 differs very little from to-day, except in the quality of the wooL The kilt was made of the finest native wool. The sheep of that time are now extinct. There being no hem on the kilt, the hard tartans, made by machinery after the Disarmament were so raspy that the edge, or selvedge, chafed the men’s legs. When Queen Victoria inspected one of her regiments, she noticed the sores and bleeding at the backs of the soldiers’ legs. She immediately notified the War Office, and since then the tartans have been softer. The Suggested Music is played to the tune of 'The Waggle of the Kilt." The fourth tune is: 'That’s the Reason Noo I wear the Kilt." This dance gives all kilt wearers license and opportunity to make good use of the “waggle” as they try out the following formations.
