Nairn is a town on the Moray Firth, north-east of Inverness. It is a tourist resort famous for its golf courses, an annual jazz festival, and one of the largest Highland games in the North. Charlie Chaplin used to go there for his annual holidays.

King James VI. of Scotland (James I. of England) visited Nairn in 1589 and used to boast afterwards that there was a town in his kingdom with a high street so long that the people at one end couldn’t understand the language of those at the other. At the time Nairn consisted of two separate settlements, one Gaelic-speaking and one Scots-speaking.
