The Braes of Tulliemet
Just south of Pitlochry, in Perthshire, not far from where the Tummel joins the Tay at Ballinluig, is Tullymet. Set on high ground, the old mansion house looks out across the valley of the Tay. Tullymet was the home of the Dick family, one of whom, William Dick, a physician, was credited with having saved the life of Sir Walter Scott. Dick was an extremely ambitious man who did all in his political power to advance the career of his son in the Black Watch, the Royal Highland Regiment. Major General Sir Robert Dick, KCB, commanded the 42nd Battalion from 1815 to 1828 and became Colonel of the 73rd Battallion. The most able and gallant son o fthe old doctor died a hero’s death at the battle of Sobraon in 1846 in the First Sikh War.
