The Braes of Atholl
The road into the Highlands, from Perth to Inverness, rises steadily through the hills around Dunkeld, higher still to Pitlochry, twisting through the dark mountain pass of Killiecrankie, to the village of Blair Atholl which is surrounded like a basin with a rim of vast hills, the southern slopes of the Grampians. Here the River Tilt joins the River Garry and among the trees gleams Blair Castle, the sparkling white citadel of the Dukes of Atholl, the overlords of the ancient Scottish division of Atholl.
Glen Tilt passes below giant Beinn a’ Ghlo – “Mountain of the Mist” – and slashes its way ever further northward into the even more towering ranges of the Grampians, until at last it reaches the great Atholl Deer Forest, the high moors where wild-life abound. As early as the 16th century James V and, later, Queen Mary were guests at stag hunts in the forest, entertainments on a grand scale that were arranged by the 3rd and 4th Earls of Atholl.
On the braes of Atholl live the “brae-men”, the name given to those who reside on the southern slopes of the Grampians. It was the brae-men who concocted the once-secret recipe for Atholl Brose, a bracing mixture composed of a “bree”, the liquid of two cups of oatmeal soaked in one cup of water and squeezed through a sieve or cheesecloth, to which is added a quarter of a cup of mountain honey and enough whisky to fill a quart bottle.
