The Red House

(or “Where Would Bonnie Annie Lie”)

This is a double titled dance, the first “The Red House” being English, the second “Where Would Bonnie Annie Lie”, Scots.

O where wad bonie Annie ly,
Alane nae mair ye mauna ly;
Wad ye a goodman try,
Is that the thing ye’re lacking.

O can a lass sae young as I,
Venture on the bridal tye
Syne down with a goodman ly,
I’m flee’d he’d keep me wauking.

Never judge until ye try,
Mak me your goodman, I
Shanna hinder you to ly,
And sleep till ye be weary.

What if I shou’d wauking ly,
When the hoboys are gawn by,
Will ye tent me when I cry,
My dear, I’m faint and iry.

In my bosom thou shalt ly,
When thou wakrife art, or dry,
Healthy cordial standing by,
Shall presently revive thee.

To your will I then comply,
Join us, priest, and let me try,
How I’ll we’ a good man ly,
Wha can a cordial gie me.

Of the song and tune on which this dance was based, William Stenhouse stated: “This song was written by Ramsay, and printed in the first volume of his Tea-Table Miscellany, in 1724, under the title of ‘THE CORDIAL, to the tune of Where shall our Goodman ly.’ One stanza of the foolish old song runs thus:

Where shall our goodman lie,
O, where shall our goodman lie;
Where shall our goodman lie,
Till he shute o’er the simmer?
Up amang the hen-hawks,
Up amang the hen-hawks,
Up amang the hen-hawks,
Amang the rotten timmer.

“This tune appears in Playford’s Dancing Master, 1657, under the title of ‘The Red House;’ and Gay selected it for one of his songs in Polly, beginning ‘I will have my humours,’ printed in 1729.“

Robert Burns used the tune for his song “The Rantin’ Dog” which begins:

O, wha my babie-clouts will buy?
O, wha will tent me when I cry?
Wha will kiss me where I lie? –
The rantin dog, the daddie o’t!
