Devised: 1994-12 1. The church of "Our Lady of the Snows" was founded by Bishop William Elphinstone in 1497. Today only a small section of the burial ground remains - tucked behind the houses on the west side of College Bounds, near Johnstone Hall. In the 4th century, John the Patrician had a vision in which the Virgin Mary directed him to build a church on a patch of snow which he would find at the height of summer on the Esquiline Hill in Rome. The truth of this story was confirmed by Pope Pius II in 1497. The information comes from "City by the grey North Sea" by Fenton Wyness. 2. The wheels on the corners during bars 9-16 can be thought of as snow flakes even though they have only three-fold, rather than six-fold, symmetry.
Table rows with a green background denote recordings starting with one of the recommended tunes and the usual number of repetitions for the dance (4). A yellow background means a recording with one of the recommended tunes but a non-standard number of repetitions. Recordings with a red background use a different tune and possibly a non-standard number of repetitions.
