The Moudiewort
The most common meaning of the Scots word “moudiewort” is “mole”. In the 18th century the moudiewort was supposed to have overtones of Jacobitism. This was based on the fact that the death of William III in 1702 was caused by injuries and a chill sustained after he was thrown from a horse that had stumbled over a Hampton Court mole hill, thus in some eyes making the mole into a hero. Jacobites in Scotland were quick to raise their glasses in tribute to the “little gentleman in velvet”.
The moudiewort also had certain erotic connotations, sexuality, often comic in nature, having been spoken of frankly and openly in the old Scottish literary tradition. A bawdy old folk song, “The Moudiewark”, reputedly collected by Robert Burns, appears in The Merry Muses of Caledonia. it is interesting to note that the tune given there is “O for ane an’ twenty, Tam”. In James Johnson’s The Scots Musical Museum, Volume 4, Burns’ song “O, for Ane an’ Twenty, Tam” is set to the tune “The Moudiewort”, which Stenhouse called “an old tune”.
