The Marquis Of Lorne
In 1457 James II created the Earldom of Argyll and conferred it upon Sir Colin Campbell of Argyll for services rendered to the Crown. The first earl married Isabella Stewart of Lorne and the lands of Lorne were added to the growing Argyll estates. In 1470 the Earl of Argyll was granted the additional title of Baron Lorne. From that time on the title of Lord Lorne and, after 1701 when Archibald Campbell was made first Duke of Argyll, the Marquess of Lorne became the title of the male heirs of the Earls, Marquesses and Dukes of Argyll.
Lorne, the ancient sub-kingdom of the west, named after Lorn, king of Dalriada, lies between the Firth of Lorne and Loch Awe with Oban as its principal centre.
