Lord Elgin's Reel

Perhaps the best know of the Bruce Earls of Elgin was Thomas, 7th Earl of Elgin and 11th Earl of Kincardine (1766–1841).

This line of the Bruce family was descended from Thomas, a 14th century relation of David II, and the organiser of a successful revolt against Edward Balliol, son of “Toom Tabard”. (See “The Auld Alliance”) As a reward he was given crown lands in Clackmannan. In the 16th century Sir George Bruce of Carnock (d. 1625), a descendent of Thomas, established a princely fortune for the Bruces through his coal mines and salt pans in Culross where he built “The Palace”. Sir George’s elder brother, Sir Edward (1548–1610), accompanied James VI (I) to London in 1603 and was created Lord Kinloss. It was he who began building the magnificent Culross Abbey House. HIs grandson, Thomas, 3rd Lord Kinloss (1599–1663) was made Earl of Elgin by Charles I in 1633. The second earl, Robert, was Lord Chamberlain at the time of his death in 1685. The third earl, Thomas (1655–1741) was imprisoned as a Jacobite in the Tower of London and spent the rest of his life in exile in Belgium. Charles, 4th Earl of Elgin (1682–1747), in spite of three wives, died without heir and the title passed to the line of Sir George of Carnock who had held the title of Earls of Kincardine since 1647.

In 1771 Thomas Bruce succeeded his brother as seventh Earl of Elgin and eleventh Earl of Kincardine. A diplomat, the earl was posted to Brussels and, later, to Berlin. From 1799 to 1802 he was envoy extraordinary at the Porte and it was while he was in Turkey that he arranged the transfer from Athens of what became known as the “Elgin Marbles”, a collection of ancient sculpture, including the Parthenon frieze from the Acropolis. (It should be noted that at that time Greece was a province of Turkey.) It cost Lord Elgin in excess of £50,000 to bring the Elgin Marbles to Britain, but the government purchased them for the British Museum in 1816 for only £36,000.
