Fugue. Men dance 8 bars behind the ladies. This is the only dance described in Roll Back the Carpet, a delightful and interesting book that analyses a large variety of possible SCD figures. It is in the section “Counterpoint” which was first published in The Reel #75.

Anselm Lingnau writes: “While we’re on the subject of Fugal Fergus, it’s probably worth mentioning that it is a derivative of the dance Waverley (or Fergus McIver) from RSCDS Book 15. The chases from the original are fairly evident in Foss’s adaptation, as is the setting and crossing (even though in Fugal Fergus it goes across the dance, while in Waverley it goes up and down). Waverley also features the poussette and double triangles, which Fugal Fergus does not. Fugal Fergus is dance #1 in Hugh Foss’s book The Waverley Fugues, which contains 12 “fugal” dances of increasing complexity, and it is the only one in the book based on an existing dance. As an exercise in devising dances, The Waverley Fugues remains unsurpassed, and it offers many interesting challenges for advanced dancers. My personal favourites are Rob Roy (#6) and Dugald Dalgetty (#9)…”
