The Frisky
While it is not usual in this work to concern oneself with the words to any other than the original tunes used for the dances, it is worthwhile recording here the words to the traditional children’s singing game, “Humber Jumber”, the tune of which is used for “The Frisky”.
As I went up by Humber Jumber,
Humber Jumber, Jeinie O,
There I met Sir Hoker Poker
Carrying away Campeinie, O.
If I had had my tit-for-tat,
My tit-my-tat, my teinie, O,
I’d never have let Sir Hoker Poker
Carry away Campeinie, O!
This was a popular riddle, the solution being “Sir Hoker Poker”, the wolf, “Campeinie”, a sheep, while the singer was the shepherd. The “tit-my-tat” was the usual name for a gun in such riddles.
