The title of this dance refers to a mountainous peninsula on the west coast of Scotland, between Loch Goil and Loch Long. The name is an anglicisation of the Gaelic baile na greine or “sunny cattle pasture”, which must be considered somewhat ironic since the area is not particularly suitable for cattle.
Argyll's Bowling Green
Between Loch Goil and Loch Long in Argyllshire is a mountainous triangle of land, the Ardgoil Estate. It is this rugged and rocky promontory that is known as “Argyll’s Bowling Green”, hardly the place for that gentle game, even among a race of giants.
In 1906 this estate of over fourteen thousand acres was presented to the city of Glasgow, not by a Campbell of Argyll as one might expect, but by Mr A. Cameron Corbett, later Lord Rowallan, “As it seems to me desireable that our fellow citizens should have a mountain territory which will be their own for all time.” Argyll’s Bowling Green now forms part of the great Argyll National Forest Park.
